down in the thicket

© Colleen Hilman
Behind my brother and sister-in-law's home is a deep gully. Steep, slippery steps down to a stream spooling moss about stones and fiddlehead ferns. Bracken and stinging nettles, buttercups and bleeding hearts. A peaceful divide between homes that share songbirds in lieu of lawnmowers.

I just love the word 'bracken'. It reminds me of The Velveteen Rabbit although I don't even know off the top of my head if the word 'bracken' is even in that story. But still, that's what it reminds me of and I love that story.

Sonshine! Me, too. In fact I am sort of collecting different illustrated books of The Velveteen Rabbit. I love how people draw the story from their own perspective.

Did you write this? It's beautiful. Worthy of Dylan Thomas! x
